The 2017 Swedish Open just finished with the Chinese dominating the event. However, Germans Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov who have been in the recent World Cup and German Open finals by beating the top Chinese players, did not play.

The 1999 Swedish Open generated my best international win as I defeated Olympian and Pan Am Gold Medalist Thiago Monteiro of Brazil. I knew he had defeated the major North American Olympic contenders (2-time Olympian Todd Sweeris, US National Men’s Singles Champion Eric Owens, and Olympian Peter-Paul Pradeeban) earlier in the year at the 1999 Pan Am Games so that was a critical test for me before the 2000 Olympic Trials. Monteiro defeated former World #1 Timo Boll’s doubles partner at the time, Zoltan Fejer-Konnerth, in the same group who I lost to so it was cool that I was in a 3-way tie with Timo Boll’s doubles partner!
