The second to last tournament of 2024, the 2024 Newark Butterfly October Open, took place this weekend at a great nearby venue, the Siliman Center. There were 13 events, mainly rating events but also age events, with trophies and medals to be won in each event. There were a number of players playing their first tournament.
HIGHER-RATED EVENTS:
In the highest two events, Open Singles and Under 2200, it was Yuyang Ying over Mihika Vangapalli in both finals. Mihika would get her title with a win in the Under 1900 event over Alex Rozhin. Saatwik Muthukumar won the Under 1600 over Debbie Malkin. Debbie would get her title in Seniors 50+ Years over Usha Mani. The Under 1300 event was won by first-time tournament player Qiuli Yang over Aditya Karanam.
LOWER-RATED EVENTS:
The events featuring our future also took place. The Under 1000 event was won by Mathew Roshan over Yashaswhi Pasumarthi. Yashaswi flipped the result and won over Mathew in the Juniors 14 Years & Under final. The Under 700 was won by Smayan Srikanth over Yashaswi. Yashaswi ended the tournament with one 1st, two 2nds, and one 3rd place so was the big winner. The Under 400 event was won by Viraj Chauhan over Aneesh Banerjee. The Under 100 event was won by Isha Sriram who won her first tournament title over Sahasrad Muthukumar. Sahasrad would also get his first tournament title in the Under 50 event over Athiksh Iyer. The Under 25 event was won by Rohan Anselm Singh over first-time tournament player Aditi Swaminathan. The Juniors 8 Years and Under event featured a 3-way tie for 1st with Vedant Rao winning 1st, Viraaj Gaikwad winning 2nd, and Pranav Dileepan winning 3rd! Isha Kriti Padmarao also finished in 3rd. Overall, it was a great experience for Fremont TTA students and players from throughout Northern California to learn their strengths and weaknesses against varied styles.
