2026 Fremont TTA Butterfly March Open tournament

The first tournament of 2026 hosted by Fremont Table Tennis Academy, the 2026 Fremont TTA Butterfly March Open, took place this past weekend featuring over 100 players battling it out in various age, rating, and open events. It took place at the usual nearby venue, the Siliman Center. Players to win multiple events were Ayaan Mohan (4 1st!) and Praful Bhaidasna (2 1st and 1 2nd). The next 3 singles tournament will take place on May 16, August 15, and October 17 followed by a Thanksgiving team tournament to close the 2026 tournament calendar on November 28-29.

HIGHER-RATED/SENIOR EVENTS

In the higher-rated/senior events, Praful Bhaidasna was the big winner living up to his top seed by winning the Under 1900 (over Carol Cai) and Seniors 50+ Years (over Michael Ramirez). He also finished 2nd in Under 2200 losing to Diego Gallardo in the finals. James Therriault from Sacramento won the Open Singles beating the top seed, Derron Douglas, in the semis and the third seed, Jineet Lilani, in the finals. Tournament host Shashin Shodhan teamed up with his student Mihika Vangapalli to win Open Doubles over Jineet Lilani and Alexis Weiner in the finals. In the Under 1600 final, youngsters Cylus Yim and Furas Ahmed faced off with Cylus taking the title. In the Under 1300 event, surprise champion Kayden Tang defeated first-time tournament player Richard Zhang in the final. 

LOWER-RATED EVENTS/JUNIOR EVENTS

In the lower-rated events/junior events, Ayaan Mohan was the big winner winning 4 1st places! He lived up to his top seeded position and won 1st place in Under 450 (over Advik Krishna), Under 200, Under 150, and Under 125. Special mention also to Ethan Alex who won 4 2nd places (Under 250, Under 200, Under 150, Under 125)! Yeehan Tan won the Under 1000 event over his friend Abhi Thakur. Vincent Gass won his first tournament title winning the Under 700 over Yashvi Khandelwal. Rishaan Patel won the Under 250 title. Tanisha Balamurugan won Juniors 18 Years and Under over Zachary Zhou. The Juniors 11 Years & Under final was a reversal of the Under 1600 final with Furas Ahmed winning this time over Cylus Yim. 

JUNIORS 8 YEARS & UNDER

In the Juniors 8 Years & Under event representing Fremont TTA’s future, Kwanita Amarthaluri won 1st place for the second consecutive time 2 days before her 9th birthday! Rugved Kharatmal reached the final and won 2nd place! Third place went to Karthik Masurkar and Vedant Gayaka and 5th place to Sid Kondadasula.

2025 US Open

2025 US Open: Sid Medals, 7 5th Place Finishes or Better

Fremont Table Tennis Academy advanced students went to the 2025 US Open in Las Vegas, Nevada which featured 1300 of the best players in North America and some other top international players. The serious advanced students train year-round to try to perform well in these tournaments. Students to go were Mihika, Raghav, Anchit, Hasini, Isha, Smayan, Kavi, Siddanth, and Kethan. Raghav, Anchit, Hasini, Isha, Kavi, Siddanth, and me all reached the quarters or better in a rating category highlighted by Siddanth’s bronze medal in the Under 1000 rating event….

2025 Butterfly Thanksgiving Teams

The 2025 Newark Butterfly West Coast Teams tournament took place this past weekend with a chance to burn off the Thanksgiving calories. Each player played more matches than a normal tournament with singles and doubles both in play. Team tournaments are usually more fun than singles tournaments. More players went home with trophies than not. Teams were divided into 3 divisions with the winning teams being Alex Tre for Division 1, Titans (Vipin, Isha) for Division 2, and Team Champions (Arnav, Dylan) for Division 3….
