German legend, former World #1, 2-time World Cup Champion, and 2-time Olympic medalist Timo Boll returned to the World Tour after about a one year break and dominated the 2017 Korean Open while winning men’s singles!
He lost 2 games in his semi-final match en route to the title and won every other match 4-0. He has the record for most European Men’s Singles titles in European Championships history. He is one of the few players in recent times that has played evenly with or beaten the top Chinese players in major tournaments. He was also voted Germany’s flagbearer at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

I talked to Timo Boll’s coach around 1999 when I was training full-time for the 2000 Olympic Trials and he told me I could practice with Timo Boll and his team but I decided against it. I wasn’t able to get on a German league team in the fall as the team rosters were already finalized in the summer and I didn’t want to play players too good. I ended up going to Sweden where I could play tournaments and practice with more players my level where I could learn more tactical play. If I played with Timo Boll, it wouldn’t have mattered much what I did as he would have won most of the points.
