Our home team, the Golden State Warriors, won their 2nd NBA Championship in 3 years!! New addition Kevin Durant, who joined the Warriors in the offseason, won the NBA Finals MVP and won his first NBA title.

Durant scored 30+ points in all 5 Finals games to be the first player to do so in 5 consecutive Finals games since 2000. The core Warriors players of the past 3 years of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green got their revenge on Cleveland after losing a 3-1 series lead last year.

Klay Thompson playing table-tennis in China. Thompson won the Warriors team ping-pong tournament held earlier this season instead of a day of practice.

I normally never got to watch much of the Warriors games due to my busy coaching schedule but cleared my schedule to watch today’s Game 5 clinching win. It’s great to see an unselfish team who are also good people win the title. It’s also of course great to see Warriors teams win so often now after all the long years of losing and suffering for the local fan base. The Warriors could already be considered the GOAT in basketball as they have already set many records including most regular season wins in a season and most wins over a 3-year span.

Table-tennis is a skill-based sport and the Warriors have changed the game of basketball making it a more skill-based league with ball movement, the 3-point shot, and tenacity on defense. Head coach Steve Kerr replaced a day of practice earlier this season to have a ping-pong tournament that was won by Klay Thompson. Stephen Curry was in the ping-pong commercial with Serena Williams for Chase this year that many have seen. In an earlier season, Thompson was asked in a TV interview to say something about Curry we don’t know and Thompson jokingly said Curry is a “sore loser” in ping-pong. Thompson played ping-pong with his brothers growing up.

Here are tidbits about the 4 key Warriors:

Kevin Durant-He said people laughed at him at the NBA Combine before he played in the NBA because he could not bench press much. However, he knew he was the most skilled player and could beat anyone in his draft 1-on-1. He is stronger now than when he first entered the league but still is largely a skill-based player. He is now a NBA Champion and Finals MVP!

Draymond Green-He is possibly the best defender in the league who has one of the best combinations of tenacity and skill. In addition to being a lock-down defender, he can pass and shoot the 3-point shot.

Stephen Curry-The two-time MVP is likely the most skilled player in the NBA. He is already considered the best shooter of all-time. Despite his relatively small size for NBA standards, he is one of the best finishers around the rim with a wide array of finishes. He is also one of the best passers and one of the league leaders in steals.

Klay Thompson-He is also already considered one of the best shooters of all-time and with Stephen Curry, makes the best shooting backcourt of all time. Even though he struggled with his shot at times in the playoffs, his defense which he stated was “effort and pride” was consistently good. In Game 1, besides a prayer-heave made by Kyrie Irving, Cavaliers players were 0-11 when Thompson was guarding them.
