When Rosskopf won the World Men’s Doubles title in Dortmund, Germany in 1989, Germany got a really big boost in table-tennis. The capacity crowd was going crazy during their run and especially when they upset the defending World Champions from China!
This was the same World Championship that the golden generation of Swedish table-tennis led by Jan-Ove Waldner and Jorgen Persson won their first major titles and began defeating China. Rosskopf would go on to win the European Men’s Singles title in Stuttgart, Germany in 1992 so seems to play better in front of his home crowd. He also won a silver medal in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics in men’s doubles with Steffen Fetzner and won the bronze in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics in men’s singles. He has recently been head coach of the German men’s team where he has coached Timo Boll and Dimitrij Ovtcharov who are two of the biggest threats to China.
