The Women’s World Cup took place in North America for the second year in a row, this time in Markham, Canada. Last year, it was held in Philadelphia and the finals were televised live on ESPN. Last year, China did not send any women and the final was won by Japan’s Miu Hirano over Chinese Taipei’s Cheng I-Cheng. Those two met in the bronze medal match this year with the outcomes reversed. Miu Hirano shocked the world when she beat all three Chinese women to win the 2017 Asian Championship to become the youngest ever winner of that event and the first Japanese winner in 20 years. In the quarterfinals at the Asian Championships against World #1 Ding Ning, she was down many match points and I think Ding Ning played sub-par. It’s possible the Chinese women were shocked, then tightened up, and lost mentally to Miu Hirano in the semis and finals. Hirano has been beaten by the Chinese women easily since then.
In the final this year, it was China’s Zhu Yuling winning over teammate Liu Shiwen in the final 12-10 in the 7th game. This is the second major title that Zhu Yuling defeated Liu Shiwen in 7 games this year along with the Asian Cup in Ahmedabad, India.
