Boll knocked out both Chinese, Asian Cup Champion Lin Gaoyuan and World #1 Ma Long, in the quarters and semis, respectively with two epic comebacks.
Boll was down 10-4 in the decider against Lin and won 13-11. Boll was down 3-1 in games and won 12-10 in the 7th against Ma. Ovtcharov defeated Boll in the final and has been winning most of their meetings this year.
