2025 Newark Butterfly May Open tournament

The second tournament of 2025 hosted by Fremont Table Tennis Academy featured nearly 100 players from Santa Cruz to Sacramento battling at the great nearby venue, the Siliman Center. Players battled for rating points, trophies, and medals in the 16 events offered. There was Open Singles, rating events for all levels, junior events, and a seniors event. There were a number of multiple finalists in this tournament, more so than usual. Michael Ramirez was the only player to reach 3 finals winning the Under 1900 and Seniors 50+ Years and coming in 2nd in Under 2200! Other top performers to reach two finals were Anchit Nayak (1st-U1600, 2nd-Juniors 18 Years & Under), Smayan Srikanth (1st-U1300, 2nd-U1600), Chris Boyea (1st-U-1000, 2nd-U1300), Saeid Shahraz (1st-U700, 2nd-U1000), Akash Tangri (1st-U400, 2nd-U700), Kaviyuvan Irullappan (1st-Juniors 11 Years & Under, 2nd-U400), and  Steve Roberts (1st-U25, 2nd-U50).

HIGHER-RATED/OLDER AGE EVENTS:

In the higher rated and older age events, Luis Marcano won the Open Singles over Sacramento’s lobber/chopper James Therriault. Yuyang Ying won the Under 2200 over Michael Ramirez.  Michael Ramirez, however, was the big winner winning two 1st (Under 1900, Seniors 50+) and one 2nd (under 2200). Other players to reach two finals in the higher events were Anchit Nayak (1st-U1600, 2nd-Juniors 18 years), Smayan Srikanth (1st-U1300, 2nd-U1600), and Chris Boyea (1st-U1000, 2nd-U1300). Mathew Roshan won Juniors 18 Years & Under.

LOWER-RATED EVENTS/YOUNGER AGE EVENTS:

In the lower-rated events, Saeid Shahraz won 1st in U700 to follow his 2nd place in U1000. Akash Tangri won 1st in U400 for the second consecutive time along with being a finalist in U700. Kaviyuvan Irullappan won 1st in Juniors 11 Years & Under and 2nd in U400. Christian Sampaio won his first tournament title winning the U100 over Evaan Nivin. Athiksh Iyer won the U50 title over Steve Roberts but Steve would also get his first title in U25 over Rohan Anselm Singh. In the Juniors 8 Years & Under title, Viraaj Gaikwad would win his second consecutive title over Pannag Mahesh. Aditya Vitta and Aadhya Vinoth would win 3rd.

Some of the Fremont Table Tennis Academy advanced students went to the 2025 US Nationals this past week in Ontario, California. Students to go were Michael, Saatwik, Yash, Anchit, Mathew, Hasini, Isha, Siddanth. Everyone except Saatwik and Anchit were playing their first US Nationals. Anchit and Saatwik were playing their second Nationals. Anchit won gold at last year’s Nationals in Alabama and Saatwik won 5th place. Overall, this tournament was a great experience for all warming up together, cheering the other teammates, and of course, facing off against the best players with everyone match presenting a new challenge….

2025 Newark Butterfly March Open Tournament

The first tournament of 2025 hosted by Fremont Table Tennis Academy took place on Saturday, March 22 with record entries of about 100 players for a tournament at the Siliman Center. Players battled throughout the day in different events for trophies, medals, and rating points. Players to win multiple events were Daniel Simon (under 1900, under 1600) and Mathew Roshan (juniors 18 years and under, open doubles). The next two tournaments will feature the same slate of events. They will take place on Saturday, May 10 and Saturday, June 14 at the same venue, the Siliman Center….
